ICANN Invites Comments and Suggestions on IDNs

23rd September 2005

Recognizes the need for overall multilingualism in the DNS and is committed to bringing this about through a consultative approach.

ICANN recently announced that it has opened a 30 day public comment period on a draft version of its revised guidelines for the implementation of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). All interested parties are invited to submit comments by October 19th, 2005 via the ICANN website.

ICANN recognizes the need for overall multilingualism in the Domain Name System (DNS) and is committed to playing its part in this by adopting a consultative approach that includes all stakeholders, while at the same time ensuring the ongoing stability of the DNS. In developing the revised guidelines, particular attention was paid to concerns that have arisen in relation to deceptive use of visually confusable characters from different scripts in individual IDN labels.

ICANN has also announced that a full day IDN workshop will be held during its 24th International Meeting taking place in Vancouver between November 30th and December 4th. This workshop will build on discussions concerning deployment of internationalized top level domains that occurred during the IDN workshop in Luxembourg.
