Company to provide ICANN with colocation services for Global root domain name system.
Terremark Worldwide, Inc., a provider of IT infrastructure services, today announced that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has selected them to house its second instance of the Global L-Root server cluster at their flagship facility. The company states that ICANN is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet's system of unique identifiers like domain names and the addresses used in a variety of Internet protocols that help computers connect to each other over the Internet.
The company declared that it will provide ICANN with colocation services. It further claims that as a result, ICANN will be able to enhance global access to the L-Root servers, while also enhancing its ability to mitigate distributed denial-of-service attacks on the core of the Internet.
"We are extremely proud to welcome ICANN to our list of customers and provide them with the essential services they need to operate," said Manuel D. Medina, Terremark's Chairman and CEO. "Terremark shares ICANN's dedication to preserving the operational stability of the Internet and we look forward to working together to ensure uninterrupted service to many of the worlds Internet users."
"Because of the importance of ICANN in relation to the Global Internet Community, it has become critical for us to house our Global Root Domain Name System infrastructure in a secure and reliable facility that will provide us with greater accessibility as the Internet community continues to grow," said John Crain, Chief Technical Officer for ICANN. "Terremark's NAP of the Americas is our facility of choice with its access throughout North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe."
