Level 3 Expands Network in Scandinavia
Level 3 Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:LVLT) today announced plans to expand its European network in Scandinavia. The company is increasing its network capacity into Stockholm and expects to begin offering services in Copenhagen in October 2003.
“Our existing and prospective customers have been encouraging us to undertake this expansion, which will afford them even greater access to the operational, provisioning and cost advantages of our network,” stated Brady Rafuse, president of Level 3’s European operations. “Scandinavia is an increasingly important source of demand for telecommunications services, and we look forward to enhancing our ability to serve customers in that region.” In Copenhagen, Level 3 has signed an agreement to provide network services to Powerline Communication, a Danish provider of Internet access, Web hosting and IP security solutions. Powerline Communication is using Level 3’s (3)CrossRoads service, which connects Level 3’s customers and network in the U.S. and Europe with the networks that comprise the public Internet. “Level 3 offers premium IP services that enable our customers in the U.S. and Europe to connect to the Internet seamlessly and reliably,” said Mark Taylor, director of IP Services for Level 3 in Europe. “Our IP backbone is one of the largest in the world, and carries traffic for the top ISPs, cable operators, carriers, content providers, and other communications and entertainment companies.” Level 3’s fiber optic network spans 22,500 miles and serves 17 of the largest markets in Europe, as well as 66 markets across North America. In addition, the company operates metropolitan networks in 36 cities, including London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt.
